Kroger's History and Impact
The History of Shop & Share
What started as a conversation has become an event that our programs and communities look forward to every year.
The great needs of survivors sparked the concept of Shop & Share.
In 2008, a group of domestic violence advocates spoke to then-First Lady Jane Beshear about the needs of our domestic violence programs.
Not only did the First Lady agree to share our needs with then-Governor Steve Beshear, but she took our concerns one step further by developing the idea for an impactful event with a simple request to our communities.
For one day a year, domestic violence volunteers ask incoming grocery store shoppers to "shop" for what they need and "share" an item with their local domestic violence program. Since 2008, Kroger has continued to be a flagship partner of Shop & Share.
The Impact of Shop & Share
Many survivors served by your local domestic violence program have very few or no resources to keep themselves and their children safe from abuse. Donations from Shop & Share go to provide survivors of intimate partner violence and their children with:
- Food needed to prepare three (3) nourishing meals a day in the shelter
- Food care packages for survivors in rural counties
- Food to prepare school lunches for children in shelter
- Personal hygiene and infant care products
Community Feedback:
“I had the honor being at Kroger in Nicholasville during [Shop & Share 2024]. I talked to the [Shop & Share volunteers] and told them that I stayed [in a domestic violence shelter] for 8 months and how this place changed my life. How I had the honor to speak at several fundraisers for the UK dental program, how I got to fix all my mouth and teeth. And ‘cause of [my local shelter] how far I have come in life accomplishing many things.”

“Shop & Share is what I look forward to most every Superbowl weekend. Kroger is my go-to grocery store for weekly shopping and for Superbowl supplies. I love that they partner with this worthy cause, and how easy it is to get what I need and give where I can. Shop & Share is a fun and easy way to help.”
- Karen C., Shop & Share 2024 shopper
“A huge thank you to our Kroger locations. [Thank you to] all three Kroger locations in Hopkinsville, Madisonville and Powderly, and all of their kind staff who welcomed us with open arms. We think [Shop & Share 2024 is] our biggest Shop & Share to date!"
